This position is eligible for a hybrid telework schedule per the School of Professional Studies telework policy once fully trained.
The role requires TRAVEL up to 10% to other universities including NC State University in Raleigh and NC A&T State University in Greensboro.
Primary Purpose of Position
The Instructional Designer/Technologist I (IDT I) manages large-scale instructional innovation projects across three universities in the UNC System, led by UNC Charlotte, involving AI-powered personalized and adaptive learning for digital course transformation in Engineering education. This role supports UNC Charlotte’s National Science Foundation (NSF-IUSE 3) Collaborative Research Project, “Elevating Engineering Education Through Adaptive Learning Integration and Training” (NSF), in conjunction with NC State University and NC A&T State University.
The position provides project oversight and coordination across multiple departments and units, including faculty, instructional designers/technologists, leadership stakeholders within UNC Charlotte and other UNC system institutions, and graduate assistants. As part of a multi-institutional team, the IDT I will contribute to the design, development, revision, management, and scaling of multiple adaptive AI courses.
The role requires travel up to 10% to NC State University in Raleigh and NC A&T State University in Greensboro.
The position oversees project development, adaptive courseware development, faculty development, and the implementation of adaptive learning systems within the Engineering Spine, specifically linking Statics, Dynamics I, and Dynamics II. This initiative supports institutional goals to improve student success, shorten time to degree, and reduce DFW rates in core Engineering courses across all three universities’ colleges of engineering.
This role is an Instructional Design and Technology position to plan, design, and implement academic technology and/or innovative approaches that directly support faculty effectiveness in instructional design and delivery for student success. This position requires an advanced degree in a teaching or instructional design related field. Given the need to continually advance and promote the use of mixed teaching methodologies that incorporate the use of technology to not only enhance traditional classroom-based instruction but also broaden the basis for online and blended/hybrid courses, this position involves engaging with faculty, departments, and partner units across the university in multiple ways for course consulting, design, delivery, implementation, and evaluation.
Summary of Position Responsibilities
The Instructional Designer/Technologist position is a situated role for digital innovation and strategic projects in personalized and adaptive learning.
The position includes functions on:
Curriculum consultancy, design, development, implementation and support
Institutional and faculty professional development
Instructional systems/technology support
Project management, documentation, and reporting.
As such, the position requires significant project management skills for strategic instructional initiatives, architecting the use and support of instructional technology, and acting as pedagogical consultant for learning innovation, particularly with AI for personalized and adaptive learning and other innovative approaches for faculty and student success.
The ID/T position also requires skills in consultation, support, and training for technology-based instructional systems as well as providing expertise in the use of academic technologies, instructional design, and best practices in teaching and learning. This will include planning, implementing, promoting, managing and evaluating the changes associated with learning environments and instructional systems. The position requires that a substantial proportion of the work commitment is devoted to instructional activities and the direction of educational/academic supportive activities for student success.
Consultancy, Design, and Development of Curriculum
- Consult with faculty and vendor teams to develop high-quality course content, modules, and assessments within the LMS, ensuring alignment with provided curriculum maps and design standards.
- Execute semesterly course maintenance, including link validation, date updates, and content revisions to ensure operational readiness prior to launch.
- Perform technical and instructional quality assurance (QA) on course materials to ensure accuracy, consistency, and functionality across devices.
- Apply accessibility standards to all course media and documents, coordinating with vendors or campus partners to resolve compliance issues as needed.
- Provide technical and pedagogical support to faculty during the course build process, assisting with the integration of e-textbooks and LTI tools.
- Develop course materials, rubrics, and support resources for faculty
- Integrate adaptive learning principles into engineering coursework to strengthen sequencing, cross-curricular connections, and student engagement.
- Develop an adaptive learning content repository.
Design and Facilitate Faculty Development Programs
- Develop, facilitate, and moderate workshops and events, managing in-person and virtual logistics to ensure smooth delivery.
- Coordinate event scheduling, including room bookings, calendar invites, and registration/attendance tracking.
- Conduct needs assessments and readiness analyses across partner institutions to inform adoption and implementation strategies.
- Develop performance support resources, media, workshop materials, presentation decks, and post-event resources for faculty.
- Develop and execute innovative approaches to faculty development and TA development
- Provide faculty consultation on learning design, course design, and evidence-based teaching.
- Lead faculty onboarding, training, and professional development programs that build adaptive learning competency.
- Design and lead institutional and faculty capacity building through workshops, consultations, and training modules on AI-powered personalized and adaptive learning.
Instructional Technology Training and Support
- Provide technical support for the LMS (Canvas) and enterprise instructional technologies, troubleshooting and documenting user issues.
- Provide technical support related to troubleshooting, faculty and student support cases, and maintenance of academic technologies.
- Conduct 1-on-1 consultations with faculty to assist with tool functionality, settings, and instructional design strategies.
- Update and test courses on a semesterly and/or continual basis to ensure proper functioning prior to the start of the semester
- Create and maintain user guides, FAQs, and “How-to” documentation for current and emerging instructional tools.
- Collaborate with team members on user documentation, manuals, or job aids.
- Test and verify new tool features or updates as part of the team’s emerging technology piloting process.
- Support faculty in the use of AI/adaptive learning platforms integrated with enterprise systems (e.g., Canvas, Banner, Realizeit/Skillwell).
Project Management, Documentation, and Reporting
- Manage a multi-campus project with UNC Charlotte, NC State, and NC A&T faculty instructional teams and teaching assistants.
- Manage activities across departments, vendors, and institutional partners to meet project milestones and deliverables.
- Manage resources, monitor progress, and prepare periodic reports
- Maintain and update project documentation, ensuring that project trackers, timelines, and status logs are kept current and accurate.
- Utilize project management tools to monitor individual tasks and milestones, assisting the team in meeting delivery deadlines.
- Collect, organize, aggregate, and analyze data to help draft impact stories and case studies that showcase project success.
- Track and monitor data from instructional technologies (e.g., Canvas, Zoom)
- Generate reports to summarize team activities, workshop attendance, and service utilization.
- Develop or support project-related publications and presentations.
Qualifications / Hiring Criteria
Minimum Education/Experience
- Master’s degree in Instructional Systems Technology, Instructional Design & Technology, Learning Design & Technology, Teaching/Learning, Engineer/STEM Education, or a closely related field.
- 1-2 years work experience in faculty development, instructional design, or course development.
Preferred Education, Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- Strong experience with Instructional design, course development, and/or teaching in higher education with strong knowledge of instructional systems design (ISD) methods, online course development, instructional strategies and methodologies, instructional technologies, media selection/design, needs analysis, learning theory, SOTL and accessibility standards.
- Experience with instructional technologies including AI, online learning technologies, adaptive systems, microcredentials, educational analytics tools, data dashboards, project management tools, vendor tool configurations, and LTIs.
- Experience managing instructional projects, including multi-institution collaborations; experience working with government-funded academic grants (e.g., NSF).
- Exceptional attention to detail, communication skills, both written and oral, with confidence in leading instructional workshops, training, or consultations, providing and receiving constructive feedback and to work effectively in a team-oriented environment.
- Ability to travel up to 10% of the time.
