Digital Accessibility Champion Badge
The Digital Accessibility Champion badge recognizes faculty and staff who have demonstrated a foundational commitment to creating inclusive digital experiences at UNC Charlotte. Participants need to have successfully completed the UNC Charlotte Accessibility Mini-Bootcamp.
Prerequisite
- Basic Computer Skills: email, accessing the internet, uploading and downloading files, linking pages
- Access to a live Canvas course
- No prior workshops required
Learning Outcomes
The participants will be able to
- Course Diagnostic Mastery: Successfully interpret a UDOIT accessibility and course quality scan to identify errors within a Canvas course.
- Canvas Content Optimization: Improve page design and navigation by implementing logical heading structures and readable font styles directly within the Canvas Rich Content Editor.
- Document Remediation: Audit and update course files (Word, PDF, or PowerPoint) to ensure they are properly tagged, searchable, and usable for students using screen readers.
- Media Readiness: Apply captioning strategies and ensure all instructional videos meet university standards for accuracy and accessibility.
- Successful Verification: Receive a “clean” UDOIT scan for at least one complete course module, verified by CTL staff, confirming that all critical accessibility barriers have been remediated.
Required Workshops (15 credits)
- Part 1: Canvas Accessibility with UDOIT (Synchronous, 1 Credit): Bring your courses into compliance with the latest requirements. This workshop will show you how to use UDOIT, the accessibility checker built in to Canvas, to identify and address common accessibility issues like headings, alternative text for images, color contrast, descriptive link texts, and video captions, and more.
* Workshop format: Online Synchronous - Part 2: Files and PDF Accessibility Checkers: Using Grackle, Adobe, and Microsoft Tools (Synchronous, 1 Credit): Join this hands-on session on how to make your files and PDF accessible. Using Grackle, Adobe Acrobat, and Microsoft tools, attendees will learn how to scan their documents, interpret the checker reports and apply step-by-step remediations to make course files accessible.
* Workshop format: Online Synchronous - Part 3: Improving course media and captioning (Synchronous, 1 Credit): This session guides faculty through the “how” and “when” of implementing key accessibility features to your video content in Canvas, including generating accurate closed captions, creating transcripts, and determining when audio descriptions are necessary and how to add them to your videos.
* Workshop format: Online Synchronous - Part 4: Creating Accessible Instructional Materials with AI (Synchronous, 1 Credit): This one-hour interactive workshop will demonstrate how to use Generative AI to create accessible instructional materials.
* Workshop format: Online Synchronous - Part 5: Accessibility Canvas Course Scan (12 credits): This scan will serve as your deliverable for this certificate. Follow the list below to fulfill this requirements for your scan.
* Workshop Forman: Asynchronous- You will run a UDOIT scan on one of your live Canvas courses.
- Address the accessibility concerns identified in the UDOIT scan.
- Once you have a UDOIT score of 90% or better, you can download your UDOIT report and submit it, along with a link to your course. to our form linked below.

- The CTL certificates are for instructors, academic support staff, and gradaute students.
- Do I have to complete all the requirements in a single semester or year?
- No! You may take as long as you like to earn the certificate.
- How is the certificate awarded?
- Participants who complete all the requirements will be issued a digital credential via a Credly badge.
