Using AI to Prepare Multiple Choice Exams

A colleague recently suggested “NotebookLM” as a tool for generating content for an exam. I was teaching a new class (a lot of work!) and was halfway through my course when the first exam was scheduled. I had the idea of giving this tool a shot and was blown away. I uploaded my course notes in pdf format and asked it to generate a list of multiple choice questions. It did an excellent job using exactly the same content the students have access to for studying, and generated many good alternative choices. Of course they needed to be curated and vetted but it was a huge time saver. The AI even exported the output into a Latex typesetting format to include seamlessly into my exam template. On top of all this, the program is also capable of generating a podcast from your lecture notes. It was fascinating to listen to!
