What device do I need to be able to use Poll Everywhere?

You must have a Wi-Fi enabled device to be able to use Poll Everywhere in your classes that require it. This can be a laptop computer, tablet, or smartphone. If you do not have such a device, you will need to have one every time you attend the class that requires it, and you have several options. The simplest option may be to buy an inexpensive tablet, such as an Amazon Fire (formerly known as Kindle Fire), which is just under $50, or you can use a (inactivated) Wi-Fi-only smart phone, which can also be purchased for as low as $20 or $30. You can use any mobile Wi-Fi enabled device to respond to Poll Everywhere questions. Another option includes checking out a laptop or tablet from the library on a daily basis, but this method is not completely reliable, since availability is not always guaranteed. Students will be able to respond to polling questions by entering their UNC Charlotte NinerNET email address. Students will be prompted to sign in via Single-Sign On (SSO) to respond to questions. Faculty will communicate to their students where the Poll Everywhere link can be found on the question slide.

How do students download and use the Poll Everywhere mobile app to respond to questions?

The Poll Everywhere mobile app allows students to respond to questions using a Apple iPhone, iPad, and Android mobile devices. Presenters can also use the mobile app as a presentation remote from their phone.

What do I need to know as a student regarding the ethical use of Poll Everywhere?

“Each class period, several questions will be asked via Poll Everywhere (free; download the application). You must be physically present during class and bring a Wi-Fi enabled device (i.e. smartphone, tablet, laptop) to answer and earn the polling points. The questions will focus on the materials covered in class and the difficulty level will vary. Students should not convey answers to polling questions to their colleagues who are absent from class; violation of this policy will result in the loss of all polling points for the semester for any and all offending students. This behavior represents collusion among students, thus a violation of UNC Charlotte’s Code of Student Academic Integrity.”

My device will not register my location for a poll tracking attendance. What is wrong?

If your device will not register your location, there are several factors that could be causing this. Try the following troubleshooting measures:

  1. Make sure you clicked the “Allow” pop-up before the poll that gives Poll Everywhere access to your location. See examples here.
  2. Ensure you are connected to the EDUROAM Wi-Fi and not Niner Wi-Fi Guest or cell tower internet service.
  3. Click “Retry” a few times, if this does not “check you into” the poll, log out of Poll Everywhere and log back in.
  4. Look at what browser you are using. If it is a browser other than Google Chrome, try switching to Google Chrome and see if this corrects the problem.
  5. If you are still unable to register your location/check-in and have tried all of the above troubleshooting measures, alert your instructor during the class period and submit a help ticket to OneIT at help.charlotte.edu

My response went to the wrong poll. How did that happen?

Your faculty may have moved on to another poll just before you sent your response or used a poll account that is similar to another poll account. Additionally, you have have not joined the correct polling session. If the faculty activates a different poll in the same presenter session before your response to the first poll is sent, and the current poll allows the type of response you chose, your response will end up in the poll that is currently active.
