AI and the Middle School Classroom: A Tool for Teaching and Learning

AI in K-12, MagicSchool, Technology Integration

During my studies, I was introduced to a variety of instructional tools that made me rethink my own practices. But it was ELDT 5100 that really opened my eyes to the potential of technology in education. The primary objective of ELDT-5100 is to encourage students to explore EdTech tools they haven’t previously had the chance to use and collaborate with their peers to find practical applications for these tools in their current or future roles. To accomplish this Dr. Corey McNeill, our instructor, designed a semester-long Professional Learning Network Project.

My group chose to delve into generative AI and its potential to be transformative for educators; a topic that fascinated us all. We were drawn to it because we saw its potential to address the everyday challenges teachers face – like never having enough time for lesson planning or struggling to personalize learning for every student.

We set out to create a list of AI-enhanced tools for educators, but we wanted it to be more than just a static document. We envisioned a dynamic resource that would evolve with the field, using AI itself to stay current and relevant. As we dug into our research, we uncovered some amazing tools such as School AI, ChatGPT, Curipod, and AI for Education. These AI tools could provide teachers assistance with creating engaging lessons, designing personalized learning, providing interactive science simulations or customizing math problems. It was mind-blowing to see how these tools could save time and enhance the quality of teaching materials. We took these resources and curated a Google site that could be added to as information changed.

During this research, I stumbled upon Magic School AI. This platform caught my attention because it was created by educators, for educators. I joined their Pioneer program and completed their trainer certification course. It was a game-changer.

Excited by the potential, I convinced my school to invest in a trial subscription. And let me tell you, the results have been fantastic. Teachers are using the platform to tackle administrative tasks, create differentiated materials, and build detailed lessons and rubrics. They’re also using translation tools to better support our English language learners and a text leveler tool to make materials accessible for all.

One feature that’s been a big hit is the AI chatbots that give personalized feedback to students. It’s been especially useful in our writing classes, giving students immediate feedback and freeing up teachers to focus on the more complex aspects of writing instruction.

Of course, implementing AI tools hasn’t been without its challenges. We’ve had to address concerns about AI-generated content and reassure teachers that these tools are meant to enhance their expertise, not replace it. But as teachers have seen the benefits firsthand, they’ve become more excited about exploring AI’s potential.

This journey has reinforced my belief in the power of technology to transform education. As we continue to integrate generative AI into our practices, I’m excited about the possibilities it holds for personalizing learning, reducing teacher workload, and preparing our students for a future where AI will play a significant role.

Looking back, I realize that my decision to pursue this master’s degree has led me to the cutting edge of educational technology. It’s been an incredible journey, and I can’t wait to see where it takes us next.
